Tipping Protocol for Increased Community Engagement

Hey Hoppers,

We’ve developed a tipping protocol that helps boost community engagement by rewarding valuable contributors.

We want to gauge interest by first seeing where it would be most useful for DAOs.

I have two questions:

  1. Would you be interested in enabling users to tip each other here on discourse? (The idea being to increase engagement of native members)
  2. Would you be interested in increasing engagement for your tweets? (By rewarding users who like/ retweet or comment on your tweets)

This will help us know what’s most interesting to you. The protocol is ready and I’m happy to share links if there is interest in taking a look.

Hey @skyfoxx, thanks for expressing interest in helping improve engagement in the community. This is certainly an issue that many DAOs face, and Hop DAO is no different. I will mostly be answering your first question with this post.

Are you familiar with the current solution for delegate incentivization? Having attended a few community calls, it seems like the community is satisfied with this mode of incentivising participation and contribution in the DAO.

I think introducing a gratuity for posting on Discourse could benefit if it enables $HOP holders who do not often voice their feedback to post more. Users of Hop Protocol and $HOP holders should have a voice here as well, and should be encouraged to voice their opinions and feedback on what is discussed here.

However, I have some concerns about using a form of gratuity to solve this issue. For example, should the services offered by “voicing opinions” here be tipped, and why? Should tipping signal value in one’s opinion (and thus, should we evaluate opinion on a forum like this, would this be discriminatory)? Should “tippers” be given a choice of max/min amount to tip? Should contributors expect tips, and by extension, should the delegate incentivization program be amended in light of this?

There are many more concerns and questions I have about this, maybe showing an example where this has worked before would help. Also, maybe try discussing this more in the discord, and even on the bi-weekly community calls! You will surely get more frequent feedback on those forums.

Thanks for that detailed response, @takeabreath.

The delegate incentivization seems pretty detailed and I guess if it works, that’s a good signal. You also raised some philosophical questions of valuing an opinion, and practical ones on max/ min to tip. We’ve designed our system to make tipping similar to likes here, or claps on medium.

But the idea is that it’s the collective that decides who should be rewarded in your community.

I created a short video here to let you know what we are about.

TLDR:

  1. Users can tip good content
  2. Our protocol gives additional rewards to to authors and finders of good content
  3. This works on Twitter and also here
  4. There is a risk free way of trying it : - )

Would love your feedback!
