[Grant Proposal] Automated Community Call Minute Taking

Project Description:

Hop community calls occur every two weeks and are essential for effective governance and community engagement within the Hop Protocol. Accurate and timely meeting minutes are crucial for transparency and ensuring that all community members, regardless of attendance, have access to the discussions and decisions made.

Since May 2023, I have been responsible for recording these minutes. This involves:

  • Attending calls to record the audio.
  • Transcribing audio recordings into text with whisper
  • Correcting for acronyms, industry-specific terms, and lingo unique to our community (e.g., RXPWNS, L2, LP, DEX, ARB, OP, rETH, DAOs).
  • Summarizing the content with ChatGPT.
  • Reviewing and refining the summaries for accuracy and clarity against what was discussed.
  • Posting the finalized minutes to our social channels and forums.

The proposal aims to continue providing this service while progressively automating the process wherever practical. By implementing automation tools, we can enhance efficiency, reduce the potential for human error, and ultimately eliminate reliance on a single individualā€”thereby removing a single point of failure.

Dune Dashboard Creators

For any applicants applying for the Dune Dashboard RFP, please note: It was discussed on the 11/13/2024 community call that with the launch of v2, gathering v1 data will be less important going forward. It was recommended that any applicants for the Dashboard be aware of that. Expectation would be to still apply now so the council can set aside funds, however actual work would not start until nearer to v2 launch.

Project Name: Hop Dune Dashboard and Spellbook

Project Description:

This project entails developing a Hop Protocol Dashboard encompassing the protocolā€™s utilisation, performance, transition from V1 and V2, and exploration of liquidity movement across chains. As well as incorporating a high-level metrics into the volume, fees, users into the Spellbook. The Spellbook will serve as a query of bridge activities. Decomposing this dashboard further:

Utilisation relates to the active users (retained users and new users), volume (per pool, asset type, and chain), fees (per pool, asset type, chain). These metrics help highlight and realise Hopā€™s effectiveness within the bridge category.

Double clicking on this, it might be useful to indicate the power users by time period (weekly, monthly, and all-time) both on the liquidity side and bridging side. To make improved decision-making from both the community and the DAO to explore ways of supporting these users in the interaction with Hop (either through internal incentive structures, or other initiatives enabling growth for Hop).

As many liquidity providers have noticed, itā€™s often difficult to assess how the performance of all pools are, such that they can deploy capital for the most efficient use. What I propose is a solution that tracks APRs for pools based on the underlying fees, enabling visibility into performance.

The transition for V1 to V2 interactions will take some time and gradual improvements, as noted in the V2 documentation. It would be great to highlight this move, indicating V2 success as it gains momentum, specifically I will work to cover tracking volume, fees, and users from these versions.

At Hopā€™s core it helps build a foundation to resolving fragmentation of liquidity across chains. Iā€™d like to work on metrics that help showcase the flow of liquidity from the source and destination. As a user this can indicate where tokens are flowing and where activity is. And with the initiation of V2 the possibility of Hopā€™s core messenger will speed up the way applications utilise Hop.

Iā€™d be happy to incorporate community feedback, that was not yet focused on within this scope, as it will be helpful in the development process.

The Spellbook, will contain the metrics for bridge transactions for all supported chains. This would include volume, source, and destination chains and users, the timestamp of the transaction, the token bridged. This way users can develop metrics very clearly and comprehensively for Hop on Dune.

Shogun - Data Analyst

Hi I am Shogun, I have been working on Dune Dashboards for quite some time now, worked with protocols like Railgun, Dolomite, and GMX for their official dashboards. You can visit my profile at https://dune.com/shogun for more info!

I would like to take the initiative of working on the design and development of the Hop V2 dashboard.

My collaborations with Hop, have been closely tied with designing the LTIPP dashboard for Hop, as apart of the requirements outlined for the LTIPP by the Arbitrum DAO. This meant tracking the users, volume, liquidity held by users, incentive distribution, bridge transactions, and fees generated. Which underwent several iterations across months, incorporating V1 pools for Arbitrum:

  • List of all bridge txs

  • List of all Hop Liquidity Providers

  • Pool Breakdown for volume, fees, and TVL

  • List of all pools on Arbitrum

RFP Category: Dashboard and Analytical Tooling for Protocol Insights

Requested Grant Size & Justification:

The request Grant Size is ($5700 @ current prices 300,000 HOP)

This grant will fund the development for research committed, design & development for both the Dashboard and Spell Book, and the maintenance for six months.

I anticipate the implementations for the project, varying based on pool design. I will ensure to work closely with the development team and review the core logic in the contracts in undertaking the development.

Grant Objectives & Purpose:
The grantā€™s objective is to highlight Hop protocolā€™s metrics to a wider audience that can help derive protocol-specific insights, create actionable decisions, and improve the usage of data for Hop amongst the DAO and the community! Thereby, increasing awareness for Hop and invite new users to gravitate, utilise, or build on Hop.

Project Benefit to Protocol or DAO:
Both the dashboard and spellbook, will evidence metrics that validate the measure of success in V2ā€™s introduction, fine-tuning when necessary, and having realised the protocolā€™s transition taken into effect. This can make transformational insights that can be best utilised for vault changes, adoption of new assets, and increase usage over the platform.

Proof of Concept/MVP: As of my past experienced outlined in background, my contributions will be aligned with maintaining high quality, in the development of the project.

Grant Execution Strategy:

ā€¢ Methodology:

The project execution follows a flow starting with a two-week research period examining Hop V1 and V2 contract architecture, data structures, and event logs. This includes identifying analytics gaps and gathering community feedback on desired metrics (preserving high quality, accuracy, and remediation when necessary).

Development spans 6-8 weeks, beginning with foundational query creation for transaction tracking and chain-specific adapters. This extends into advanced analytics implementation for liquidity provider tracking, APR calculations, and power user identification. The final development stage focuses on interactive Dune dashboard with a comprehensive overview over the platform.

ā€¢ Milestone Plans:

Weeks (1-3)
Research and layout the architecture of the contracts, data schema, and identify if auxiliary any endpoints are needed. The focus on these weeks, are to make an understanding of the transactions, identify users, and work on chain integrations.

Weeks 4-6
Deliver complete APR calculations, tracking liquidity providers, covering core metrics, utilisation, performance, transition for V1 to V2, and unfettered access to liquidity movements across chains using Hop. Additionally work on the development of the Spellbook, which would require

Week 7-8
This final phase will undertake assessing all integrations, support community feedback changes, and send it into full production.

ā€¢ Risk Assessment: (Identify challenges and mitigation strategies)
Technical Risks
Fortunately for Dune, thereā€™s been a wide expansion of networks being supported, therefore cross-chain data consistency, however there still may be some technical challenges with the data, similarly for contract updates for V2, necessitates modular query designs and regular monitoring. Any performance issues with large datasets will be addressed through data optimisation and materialised views.

Operational Risks
Timeline delays from unexpected complexities will be manages through buffer time allocation and regular progress updates. Any constraints, regarding data availability, will be addressed through alternative data sourcing, and comphrensive implementations.

ā€¢ Metrics for Success: (Define measurable KPIs)

  • Development of the dashboard, completed, and deployed into production within the time frame.
  • Track growth through traction using Duneā€™s star mechanism.
  • Regularly communicate with the DAO, community, and team to validate success.

Project Name: Hop V2 Analytics Dashboard

Project Description:

On the topic of ā€œDashboard Creation,ā€ I propose to offer my experience building data dashboards to create a dashboard that tracks Hop V2 metrics.

This dashboard would be built on the Dune Analytics platform and shared with the community for their needs.

Critical metrics pertaining to Hop V2 will be tracked and illustrated on this dashboard, including fees generated, protocol usage metrics, and performance.

The goal is to provide metrics that allow the community to gauge the performance of Hop V2 and how this performance may be affected by exogenous factors.

Community Tools::Dashboard Creation

Requested Grant Size & Justification:

$5000 USD (or ~252,491 $HOP at $0.019802, the 7-day TWAP for $HOP as of writing this proposal).

Assuming this dashboard takes 200 hours for completion (over a 37-day period), this comes down to ~$25/hour.

Justifications:

  • This figure reflects the time required for the contract audit and engineering of the dashboard, as well as for surveying and assessing feedback from the community (and conducting additional changes, and ā€œcredit costsā€ for periodic dashboard updates).
  • Without offering any concrete examples, $25/hour for completing a Dune Dashboard for protocol analytics seems like a competitive rate in this space.
  • Quality of work is important, and as illustrated in my previous work, my dashboards are created using easily readable, modular queries, which are publicly available and tend to run rather quickly.
    • This level of quality will be reflected in this dashboard as well.

Grant Objectives & Purpose:

The objective of this grant is to provide the Hop DAO community (which includes protocol engineers, delegates, bonders, Liquidity Providers/LPs, and bridgers) with an overview of the protocolā€™s performance based on the following metrics:

  • Fees generated
  • TVL
  • Reward/yield distribution
  • Potentially more, based on unique Hop V2 features observed on launch of V2 smart contracts

All metrics will be aggregated by blockchain and bridged asset symbol. This allows users of this dashboard to make better business decisions when operating the protocol:

  • Protocol engineers could use this dashboard as a monitoring tool for the protocolā€™s various components.
  • Delegates could use this data to plan liquidity incentivization campaigns, onboard liquidity for new assets belonging to an underrepresented asset class, and check how the protocol behaves under moments of exogenous market stress.
  • Bonders can use this tool to track chain and asset/token performance to choose which assets would be best to front liquidity for.
  • LPs can track the performance of their positions and track which tokens offer the best opportunity for generating income.
  • Bridgers can use this dashboard to check how much liquidity exists on the destination chain they would like to bridge to.

The aim of this proposal is to ensure that all of the above parties can meet their needs with the proposed Dune Dashboard.

Project Benefit to Protocol or DAO:

To expand on the points made in the previous section, this dashboard benefits the protocol by leveraging Dune to offload the task of calculating and continually serving analytics data on paid-for server space hosted by Hop Labs.

The DAO benefits from having a single reference for numerous metrics which help the community to meet their business needs on Hop. This point is discussed at length in the previous section.

Proof of Concept/MVP:

For an idea on how I intend to organise the metrics and charts for this dashboard, please view my previous work, especially on Hop Liquidity.

The content of the dashboard will obviously differ, but I intend to partition the dashboard in sections (fees, TVL, reward distribution, etc), provide a short explanation of each section, and then present the data to users.

Ideally, one section where LPs can monitor the liquidity of a single pool would also be provided for on the proposed dashboard.

Grant Execution Strategy:

  • Methodology:

    • Initial audit of Hop V2 smart contracts; document critical functions and events which affect or describe the performance of Hop V2
    • Assessment of what metrics can be drawn from this raw data; how can protocol performance be illustrated with raw data from contract event and calldata
    • Survey Hop community for what metrics would be most critical to display on the dashboard based on list of possible metrics generated from previous step
    • Build queries to extract and transform raw event and calldata into selected metrics
    • Chart relevant metrics onto Dashboard
    • Seek Feedback from the community, and iterate on the first version of the dashboard to ensure their needs are met
      • if there are changes that need to be made, I will edit and/or add more metrics to chart.
  • Milestone Plans:

    • Weeks 1-3 The initial audit of the contracts will be done in this time. Assistance from protocol engineers will be sought in this time where required.
    • Weeks 4-5 Will be spent on assessing how the metrics can be built, forming a plan of action, and surveying the community on what additional metrics they would like to see charted
      • protocol engineers may also be consulted during this time based on this feedback
    • Weeks 5-8 Will be used to build the dashboardā€™s queries, and then chart them on the dashboard.
    • On Week 9, the dashboard will be presented to the community. A feedback loop may be started here, where I ask the community for feedback on the dashboard, and they may propose changes
      • if these proposed changes are feasible, I may go back to working on the dashboard for some time
      • time of completion will be extended in this scenario
  • Risk Assessment:

    • Complexity of Hop V2 Smart contracts (this will become known on V2 delivery)
      • affects time to build dashboard as well as time to run queries
      • to deal with this roadblock, assistance from Hop V2 smart contract developers will be sought
    • Low participation for survey step
      • If there are no or little feedback on the survey to gauge what metrics the community would like to chart, I will just pick the ones I deem most suitable
  • Metrics for Success:

    • All proposed metrics are adequately charted and explained on the proposed dashboard
    • Dashboard is completed after 9 weeks of development
      • if an extension is required based on V2 contract complexities or feedback, this will be communicated before the deadline (or after, if this is due to feedback after the 9-week period)
    • General, positive feedback from community on dashboard delivery
